It has three campuses (Alice, Bhisho, and East London) with a total enrollment of about 15 000 students. It also has several research institutes such as the Institute for Social Development Studies (ISDS), the Institute for Poverty Land & Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), the Nelson R Mandela School of Law Research Unit (NMSL), and others.
