# Walter Sisulu University: A University of Technology and Science in South Africa
Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is a university of technology and science located in four campuses across the Eastern Cape province of South Africa: Mthatha, East London (Buffalo City), Butterworth and Komani (Queenstown). It was established on 1 July 2005 as a result of a merger between Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon and the University of Transkei.
WSU was named in honour of an icon of the South African liberation struggle, the late Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu, who was a close comrade of Nelson Mandela and a leader of the African National Congress (ANC) . WSU aims to uphold his legacy of social justice, democracy and human rights through its vision, mission and values.
