If you're planning to apply to the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), understanding how your Academic Performance Score (APS) is calculated is crucial. This score plays a vital role in determining your eligibility for admission.
How UKZN Calculates APS
UKZN uses a straightforward point system where academic excellence is recognized by awarding points based on your NSC-Deg (National Senior Certificate-Degree) results. Here's how it works:
Point System Breakdown:
Level 7 (80-100%): 7 points
Level 6 (70-79%): 6 points
Level 5 (60-69%): 5 points
Level 4 (50-59%): 4 points
Level 3 (40-49%): 3 points
Level 2 (30-39%): 2 points
Level 1 (0-29%): 1 point
Important Notes:
Life Orientation (LO) is not included in the APS calculation
Mathematics Paper 3 is not considered a full subject
No bonus points are awarded for additional subjects
How to Calculate Your APS
Your APS is calculated by adding the performance ratings of:
English (Home Language or First Additional Language)
Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy
Your best four other subjects (excluding LO)
Designated Subjects
UKZN recognizes a wide range of designated subjects, including:
Dramatic Arts, Music, and Visual Arts
Business and Consumer Studies
Life Sciences and Physical Sciences
Information Technology
Geography and History

Various technology subjects (Engineering Graphics, Agricultural Technology, etc.)
Specialized fields like Maritime Economics and Equine Studies
Remember that different programs have different APS requirements, so be sure to check the specific requirements for your chosen course of study.
This scoring system ensures a fair and transparent admission process, taking into account your overall academic performance across multiple subjects.
