How To Apply For A NSFAS Bursary

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has the task of providing financial assistance to students to kickstart their careers. One of these financial solutions are the DHET Bursary Scheme, which we know as the NSFAS bursary.

Bursaries awarded to students by NSFAS has come as a lifesaver to many. With the bursary being highly sought-after, a guide on how to apply could be a great help.

To apply online, applicants will be required to first register and create a MyNSFAS profile on the NSFAS website, which will serve as their personal account where they can log in for updates on their applications and funding throughout the year.

How To Submit Your NSFAS Online Application

Create a myNsfas account
- If you have an existing myNsfas account, click on 'login' when going to myNsfas and complete your information
- If you don't have a myNsfas account, click on 'Create account'
Log into your myNsfas account
Click on 'Apply'
Answer the questions on the screen
Upload the required supporting documents
Click on 'Submit'
You will then receive an application reference number

Do you qualify for NSFAS?

A South African citizen;
Financially needy as determined by the NSFAS means test;
Academically deserving and can demonstrate the ability to succeed in your studies; and
If you have applied or are applying to study at a public university or TVET College for a qualification.
You need to have passed Grade 09/10/11/12 to receive NSFAS funding to study at a TVET College.
You need to have passed Grade 12 to receive NSFAS funding to study at a university.
All applicants currently receiving SASSA grants will not be means tested;
Orphans and children with unemployed parents;
All learners from no-fee schools.

Applicants who receive NSFAS funding will not be required to reapply for the duration of their initial registered course.

Nsfas provides funding to students studying at one of South Africa's public Universities and TVET Colleges who come from poor and working-class backgrounds. The Nsfas bursary covers more than just your tuition fees with allowances given for transport, accommodation and other student needs.

NSFAS is the National Student Financial Aid Scheme which is a government loan and bursary fund for students through the NSFAS funding. NSFAS application and registration opens in the later part of the year for students with the NSFAS closing date usually being in the next calendar year.

Usually, students and prospective students will submit their NSFAS online application for a NSFAS bursary using myNSFAS. To submit an application, students will need to login to NSFAS account.

NSFAS To Soon Introduce More Ways To Apply For Bursaries

NSFAS will soon introduce more methods of applying for the bursary. These methods will make it easier for more students the opportunity to apply for funding.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will shortly launch additional application methods. These include WhatsApp, mobile app and USSD.

Due to come issues with these methods, NSFAS has halted these alternative application methods. These new application methods will be released to the public once they have stabilized the new system and all issues have been addressed.

NSFAS provides financial assistance to students to further their education. The bursary is available to students who meet the bursary requirements and hope to pursue their studies at public universities and TVET Colleges.

In the meantime, students may apply for the bursary online via the NSFAS website. Here is how to submit an online NSFAS application:
