The Diploma in Nursing is a four-year program that prepares you to become a registered nurse. You will learn both theoretical and practical skills that will enable you to provide quality health care to patients in various settings. You will also have the opportunity to specialize in one of the following fields: general nursing, psychiatric nursing, community nursing, or midwifery.

To apply for this program, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a South African citizen who resides in Gauteng Province.
  •  You must have one of the following school leaving certificates: a Senior Certificate, a National Senior Certificate, currently in Grade 12, or a National Vocational Certificate Primary Health.
  • You must have the following subject grades: English Level 4 or higher, Life Sciences Level 4 or higher, Mathematics Level 4 or higher or Maths Literacy Level 5 or higher, and an APS of 27 or more (Life Orientation counts half the score).
  • You must have the following competencies and attributes: problem-solving ability, patience, ability to relate to people, organizational ability, leadership ability, flexibility, calmness during a crisis, communication, numeracy and life skills, computer literacy, study skills, honesty, compassion and caring.

To apply for this program, you need to follow these steps:

  • Visit the website https://nursingintake.gauteng.gov.za and register your profile with your personal details and ID number.
  • Update your resume with your school education, training, work experience, and references.
  • Apply for the nursing training online before or on the closing date (30 June 2023).
  • Upload certified copies of your ID document and school leaving certificate or Grade 11 final results.
  • Wait for feedback from the Gauteng Department of Health within three months after the closing date. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to a selection centre for further assessment.

If you are successful, you will be required to sign an agreement with the Department of Health and attend lectures at one of the college campuses: Ann Latsky Campus, Chris Hani Baragwanath Campus, SG Lourens Campus, or Bonalesedi Campus. You will also be required to participate in Work Integrated Learning (WIL) which includes shifts and working on public holidays, weekends and nights in Gauteng Department of Health hospitals and clinics as part of the program requirements.
