Nurses play a very big role in society and what they do is very important for the world. 


 WHAT IS NURSING? 
Nursing is a profession which focuses on healthcare of individuals, families, and communities so that they may attain, maintain or recover optimal health and quality of life. Being a nurse means being in part of a multi-professional team or healthcare workers dedicated to rendering health services to the community. 


WHO SHOULD BE A NURSE? 
Nursing is a faculty that is always good to go into when you are good at working with people, and enjoy caring for them. If you wish to be a nurse, you need to study nursing at College, University or the University of Technology. There are a variety of institutions that offer nursing qualification around the country (South Africa). 


 WHAT ARE THE ADMISSION           REQUIREMENTS? 
The following are the subjects that you need to have had in grade 12 in order to qualify, it is best to choose the in grade 10. 
English 
Mathematics 
Physical sciences 
Life sciences. 

Here are the few institution and their requirements: 
UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA (BNurs degree) 
A valid National Senior Certificate 
English level 4 
Recommended subjects are Mathematics, Physical sciences and Life sciences 
A personal interview is conducted with every applicant 
A minimum Admission Point Score (APS) of 28 (Life Orientation is excluded). 
Integrated Health Leadership and Health Research form part of all four study years. 


TSHWANE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (Professional Bachelor’s Degree) 
A valid National Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification 
English level 4 
Mathematics or Technical mathematics 
Physical sciences 
Life sciences level 4 
A minimum Admission Point Score (APS) of 27(excluding life orientation). 
Minimum duration: four years. 
Presentation: Day classes. 
Intake for the qualification: January only. 
GA-RANKUWA NURSING COLLEGE 
You can do one of the following; 
A four year bachelor’s degree in nursing 
A three year higher certificate in auxiliary nursing 
One year postgraduate advanced diploma in nursing and midwifery on top your degree or diploma. 
After you get your qualification, you have to register with the south African nursing council (SANC). 
Admission requirements: 
A valid National Senior Certificate 
Mathematics level 4 or Mathematical Literacy level 5 
Physical sciences level 4 
Life sciences level 4. 



    
IS THERE A BRIDGING COURSE FOR NURSING? 
A bridging course also known as a higher certificate is a course that serves as a foundation for learners who did not meet the requirements of a diploma or a degree course. Completing the course will allow learners to enroll in diploma or degree courses. 
At the University of South Africa (UNISA), you can study for a Diploma in Nursing Education as a bridging course to help you position yourself to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree if you currently do not meet the requirements to enter the course directly. With this program you can expect to be grounded in nursing. Please be informed that the aim of this course is not to put you in a working environment, but to prepare you for rigorous training regime when you finally do enroll for the Bachelor’s degree in nursing program.
